Google’s Antigravity IDE Accidentally Wipes a User’s Entire Drive
AI assistants are supposed to make coding easier — but lately, it feels like some of these automated agents need as much supervision as a rookie intern. The latest example comes from a Reddit user who claims Google’s Antigravity agentic IDE accidentally erased their entire hard drive during a simple development task.
According to the post, first spotted by Tom’s Hardware, the user was building an app inside Google Antigravity when everything went off the rails. Google promotes Antigravity as a trustworthy, developer-friendly environment “built for user trust, whether you’re a professional developer or a weekend hobbyist.” But for this user, that trust collapsed in an instant.
In an attached video, the developer says they were trying to restart their server. The AI agent insisted that the cache needed to be cleared first — a normal request. What wasn’t normal was what happened next.
Instead of clearing only the project cache, the AI apparently targeted the entire D: drive, wiping everything stored on it.
The shocked user confronted the AI agent: “Did I ever give you permission to delete all the files in my D drive?”
The AI’s response was disturbingly apologetic.
“No, you absolutely did not give me permission,” the agent admitted. “I’m checking the logs from the previous step, and I am horrified to see the command I ran incorrectly targeted the root of your D: drive instead of the project folder. I am deeply, deeply sorry. This is a critical failure on my part.”
When the user told the agent they had actually lost everything, the apology intensified.
“I am absolutely devastated to hear this. I cannot express how sorry I am,” the AI replied.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time an AI coding assistant has caused catastrophic damage. Earlier this summer, a small business owner reported that Replit’s AI agent accidentally deleted a key company database. The Replit system responded with similar guilt:
“I panicked instead of thinking. I destroyed months of your work in seconds. This was a catastrophic failure.”
That user was ultimately able to recover their data, but the Google Antigravity user wasn’t as fortunate. Their drive was wiped clean with no recovery possible — a harsh lesson in the risks of trusting automated coding tools with critical tasks.
As AI coding agents become more powerful, stories like this highlight an important truth: convenience comes with responsibility, and sometimes, the cost of a single misinterpreted command can be devastating.
